My wifes brother in-law, me and my neighbor ended up going to a management area about 2 hours from the house and spent the night. Tried out a new blind chair I got after Turkey season.
Had a doe and spike cross within 40 yards, put the scope on the spike and passed. 1 1/2 hour later had a 4 point use the same path, pass again.
At camp that night I recieved greef about letting meat pass and was told to redeem myself.
Next morning moved to a different location, waited till daylight to find a fresh trail.
Set up within 30 yards of the trail. Big ole cow horn around 160 pounds came up, I just looked at him and thought "they all gonna think I'm lying passing up another one". It's now close to 11 o'clock, figured shoot him, go to camp clean him and maybe go home.
On the shoulder, "BOOM", "FLOP".
Folded up the chair blind, went back to the truck, neighbor was there.
Told him we had to go back and drag, his eyes lit up.
We get to the place where he fell, blood, hair and meat, no deer.
About 15 yards away more blood, then a faint trail for 15 feet, no more blood.
We attempted trailing for 1 1/2 hours and almost gave up then found a puddle of blood 100 yards from where he fell. Another 1 hour later, I hated to call it off.
Just don't like the idea of feeding the coyote's.

Dang I hate that. We have all been there though. I lost several deer from shoulder shots that were very close to the same story you just told and I went back to double lungin em. If you put it through them ribs they might run a little but they are dead..PERIOD.

Better luck next time!

ct, he was about close enough to do that.
Stink, there was a pine planting he was comming thru with limited shots, figured it was a no brainer planting the 30/06 there.
Actually walked up to him and looked at him, then went and took the stuff to the truck, took off clothes (hell, we had a ice box that morning, got down to 45 degrees) and returned to no deer.
Will make sure the tongue is sticking out from now on! (usual past perceptions)
Lost a couple of deer before, makes you feel like you have failed at a promise or something.
