How does one listen to the bearings on an outboard with a large screwdriver?

Unless you are looking for parts forget about it!! You will spend more in repairs then its worth.

Default Its a no go.

I exchanged a few more emails with the guy. I offered him $200. He said he already had on offer of $400. I don't even know that I would have given him that. I have a good 150 Merc already and any cash spent just cuts into my transom repair stash so, its just as well.
It wasn't on a boat or a stand so it can't be run and I would have bought it without knowing really anything about.
I would love to have that motor if it was in good shape though.
Yall be good.

with engine running, place the flat tip of the screwdriver directly against the engine block just where the bearings are, place your ear directly on the handle end of the screwdriver...repeat up and down the crankshaft at each bearing location...you will hear the bearing rolling clear as day...should sound smooth and consistant...if there's a bad one, you'll hear it...

Wish I had some hard numbers to post here...but the difference between the "86 150 Evinrude and the '04 150 Honda are HUGE...used to say at WOT she'd suck in insects and small birds through the gas vents...I NEVER left the dock w/out toppin' up...now I can fish several times on a tank...it took some getting used to...
