Don't know nothin about Merc's but I purchased an old 18hp Evinrude, when they rebuilt the carb they left out the washer between the bowl and upper carb.
It would idle fine but try to flood and generally run like crap when trying to run wide open. Gas sitting in the carbs sounds like bad or incorrect float setup or something drawing or letting the gas in. FERM where you at?? Aaww hell. He's still on that roadtrip to Indiana.

I had the same problem years ago, it would bog down the take off, and the plugs would foul out. It was the points.

you need to do a sync & link, meaning the carb linkages and the timing linkage need to be adjusted to factory spec and position, you will probably need amanual to do this correct( i do them, but not often enough to remember, so i dig out teh manual to make sure I don't screw up)

Update! I just ran it around the bay for an hour and all was well. No bog down and it got up to 30 mph pretty easily. I replaced the bad rectifier the other day and I think this did the trick. My only guess is that it was wreaking havoc with my ignition system not to mention draining the battery. Its nice having a working tach as well. Keeping my fngers crossed that I'm good to go now. Thanks to all.
