Since it is a JOHNNY-RUDE, I would say evaporation is your problem with the smoking on start-up. My 2 do it, and there both pre-mix.

Might be a simple fix to just unplug the fuel line & run it dry at the end of the day, or doesn't that work with oil injection?
I neutered my 200 merc years ago. I have done it for years & it prevents beaucoup problems. Doug
