When I had my inline 6 I/O all I had for a pump was the one on the motor with a ball to pump up before starting.
That said when you replace the filter fill with fuel when installing, makes for a faster start and the line will prime its self. If put on empty you will be pumping that ball for a long long time to get it primed, don't ask how I know. My guess is that they added that elet pump for that reason, but it is not needed.

Genesis, you are talking about an I/O arn't you(just making sure), if it is an inline 6 mercruiser or OMC that uses a GM 250 engine, you should have just a mechanical fuel pump on the engine. If it does have an electric pump, then someone added it. I would have to see the set up to comment on it(pics would help). Done correctly, it shouldn't be any problem, done inccorectly, it could be a major fire hazard. Now if this is a V6 engine, that changes everything. Once again, pics would help a lot. get some more info posted and I see what I can come up with

Thanks Spareparts, yes it is an i/o with an inline six gm 250.I will try get a picture up I am away from home at the moment but if what you say is correct, then I will disgard that unit{it looked a bit after market to be quite honest}and go with the following set up......3/8 fuel lines, which were on the boat when I got her, connected to a T{to select either tank}one 3/8 line to fuel seperator with 3/8 outlet and on to fuel pump.Do you think that that should do the job?Regards Brian...........

Everything you mentioned pus add in a shut-off valve on each tank so you can isolate them. This way if you get water in one tank you can shut it off and run off the other.

No inline needed before the valves. Install a valve in between each tank and your T, and then run from your T to a water seperator and then to the engine. And it's FERM for short, or THERM if you speak windtalker
.
