Never did hear of one going over, but I did stuff mine in to a 4ft. swell. Runnig in from Brenton's reef I was doing around 16 knots with a following sea. I had been on course for about 4 miles when all of a sudden the bow stuffed into a swell, almost tore the wheel from my hands. The water came over the foredeck up and over the windshield and into the cockpit. She came right out of it . Soaking wet I slowed her down for the rest of the way in. Capt K

MJ, sorry about the jinx ;)
Capt_K, thanks for sharing. What made me think of this thread was the fact that at least 3 boats within the last week have capsized in Oregon Inlet on the outer banks of NC trying to pick up big stripers off the shoals in rough water. There are some interesting pics out on the website www.customsoundcharters.com. Here's one:

Never capsized but have had some pretty scary shiite happen. Let's see, took a wave over the bow 3 times now. Once in a following sea. The other 2 were head on in 6' plus steep swells that I had NO business being out in. Shoaled right in the middle of the channel in New River inlet and took a huge sloppy breaker over the stern that left the boat full of water and sand. It also propelled us off the shoal and the boat quickly emptied.
Wow...now I'm having second thoughts about selling her! I've been beam-to drifting for grouper in nasty 3 footers and rocked gunnel to gunnel but never did I feel she was on the verge of flipping over. |

Well, this post has held up for a while now and still no one has posted a story about a V20 capsizing. That's what I was hoping for! ;)

Though I've never seen it happen to a V-20 specifically, just like any other outboard, a V-20 with an outboard would capsize once it filled with enough water. When an outboard swamps, for whatever reason, the hull rolls as the center of gravity/bouyancy shifts and the outboard leads the boat over. This I have seen.

well the older V20's will go faster then the newer ones!! I think anything before like 1977?? has no floation!
Mine is one of them. After I belive 77 they started to add floationand you can tell, Because the newer model has a higher deck giving you less free board. ot much less, but just anough to get the floation in. I have heard stories of V20's that caught under the edge of docks and get forced down at low tide, and sink because they have no floation in them.
