the optis use the expensive plugs, and $15 is for the cheap ones. Mercury oiling systems are not the best, they aren't the worse either, but after they get some age on them, I don't like to contiue to run them. The oil pump is driven by a plastic gear on the crankshaft. the plastic gear can fail and cause oiling problems. Ive also seen the clear plastic hose that feeds thr oil to and from the pump crack, it will pump the oil insode the cowl and never set the oil alarm till all the oil is gone, because the pump is still spining. Its not that hard to disconnect the system. the oil tank in my 79 was under teh hatch in the splash well. If you had to access the batteries or oil tank while in hte water, you can risk lettingwater into the bilge, especially if you are in rough water. i moved the batteries into the fish box area under the floor to allow access from inside the boat. http://www.wellcraftv20.com/communit...ead.php?t=5000 jeres teh link showing where I put them, haven't finished the job, still trying to finish the Glastron

I never ran oil tanks on my outboards, But when I got the Yamaha they all said it was the best!!
3 seasons that best Yamaha blew up when the oil pump stopped working with no alarm! I am now back to OMC and there is no oil tank in site, nor will there ever be!!

Not knocking Yamaha cause I loved the motor, and would get another in a second!!
More was just saying what you said, No mater what motor it is you are doomed sooner or later with these oil systems!

My oil tank is in the garage right next to my scrap pile. The 2.5 MERC's have a plastic 2 piece crank gear that drives the oil injection pump. These gears are very well known to fail if you bring the engine off idle before it's up to temp. The 3.0L MERCS have the same basic system that the YAMAHA's and SUZUKI's had. They were pretty reliable, but the 2.5's were not the best. MERCURY changed the platic gears out sometime around 99-00 for a bronze gear which helped out alot. Which 200 do you have? The 20o was availible in either a 2.5L or 3.0L. IIRC the 200HP BLUEWATER was a 3.0L, the OFFSHORE series was a 2.5L.
