Default TLI Replacement

My TLI is not working except when the tank is full. My tank is the standard 60 gallon floor tank in my 91 V-20. Has anyone replaced theirs? What type does it take? Can You use the generic type?

Any special requirements for replacement? I was thinking of trying to make a cover until I'm ready to put the new one in, any suggestions for covering the hole?

Question

Please educate me on what a TLI is.
The only name I could think of was "Tank Level Indicator" and thought this can't be right but when I get the time or when curosity gets the best of me I'll try to find out. Sure nuff there is such a thing.
The intended purpose of it seems to be when filling the tank for the indicator light to come on when fuel gets to the point of tripping the sending unit (near full). If yours comes on when full and goes out when a little fuel has been used this should be correct.

the tank level indicators are for waste and water tanks, I don't think they would last long in a gas tank.

Lee, what the heck are you calling a TLI

I was trying to figure out why in the world would you need them on fuel??
Better yet what are you doing with a 60 gallon tank (other that fuel) in a V20?

This is funny, I thought I was on some banished list because no one had posted a reply to my question when it was only no one understood what TLI meant.

OK Guys here you go.

TLI = Tank Level Indicator, TLI is a universal term used in the commericial/Naval ship world that represents ANY unit or components used to measure liquid / volume in a tank. (Remember I retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard engineering department) I had to deal with TLI's (and 9 million other things, the structural division for submarines was known as the REDHEADED Step Children of engineering) in my line of work.

TLI is either electrical or mechanical. The one tsubaki showed in his post is a low grade unit that only lets you know if the tank/container is full. It cannot give incremential levels.

My TLI is the sending unit int the gas tank. I took mine out and went up to my local marine guy and he ordered me one like what I have. I'm putting it in today.

But thanks for responding as I said I thought I was on a blacksheep list.

I was hoping it wasnt just me. Ive worked on boat since I was old enough to turn a wrench and didnt know what you meant.

So you need a fuel sending unit then?

We can help you with that.

Just make sure to cut the rod so that it is about an inch from the bottom of the tank. This way when you show empty you still have a little left.

I'll translate your "Navy speak" to "redneck speak". "My fuel gauge don't work right!"
