As I said in another V20 thread, "I am refinishing all of the teak on my V, and I can't wait to get some fish slime on my beautiful teak cuddy doors, trim etc". I am glad to say that that has happened!! Besides being a great boat for it's size, IMHO, the V is one of the most classy boats anywhere when it is well kept and the teak is refinished. Yeah, I use my V primarily for fishin', but there is a certain pride I take in my boat!! I bought my V because I thought the boat was a fundamentally very good boat. Teak on my V, in my mind, was a plus, and I don't mind refinishing it or doing what is necessary to keep it beautiful. I also have a fairly complete wood working shop And I have experience finishing and refinishing furniture and boats. There isn't that much teak on a V for it to be a problem for me. I would have bought an all Tupperware boat if just fishin' was the main use.
I can appreciate why people trash their teak because of the maintenance problems associated with it. However, if anyone wants to get rid of their V20 Wellcraft teak, I'll take it!! I am replacing my dash with black Starboard. If my dash would have originally been teak I would have restored the teak dash or replaced it with teak or ipe, not Starboard. I am thinking of building a bow pulpit and since a pulpit was, to my knowledge never a standard Wellcraft option, I will most likely make it out of Starboard or ipe. Ipe is a wood that may not be as maintenance free as Starboard, but it is nearly as indestructable. It wont melt, or burn like Starboard, just smolder. Like Starboard, it doesn't float. Starboard works better with power tools than ipe. Ipe can wear out carbide blades and bits fast, and you can forget working it with any hand tools other than sandpaper. Ipe's color is usually a very dark mahogany color that weathers like teak when unfinished. It isn't always that dark color. Last Saturday I picked up a piece of ipe that had the exact light color and grain pattern of unfinished teak. Every boater has their own way to look at and use their boat and all of them are ok with me if safety is first and is ahead of use and looks!! My $.02. Geek
