Since I been gone, figured Id update yall a little. (if you give a shet, read on) ;D
Hunting season has gone ok. As yall last remember I got the 460 barrel for my encore to handgun hunt with. Well guys as BAD as that 460 was I just wasnt pleased with it. Or should I say I wasnt pleased with its accuracy due to its shootability? *:-/ I scoped it out and after a busted forehead and two bleeding hands (literally bleeding in four places, not joking here) I still couldnt hit confidently with it. I am man enough to admit when I have bit off more than I can chew. I am not going to atempt to shoot an animal unless I am 100% confident in my weapon and my abilities with it. I knew something had to change so I decided to look into a .243, 7-08, or .308. I love my .243 rifle, but wouldnt mind having something with a little more grunt for deer. I didnt want to deal with the extra recoil of the .308 in a handgun so my heart was set on a 7-08 barrel. I done some looking and I hooked up with a guy on another board and traded him my 15" 460 barrel for his 12" 7mm08. I even threw a couple bandaids in with the barrel for him to bandage up his hands with when he was done. :P I got the 7-08 barrel , bore sighted it and shot it. I liked it. ALOT. I shot some Hornady 139's and I was very pleased with the results. The little 7mm is definitely a ton of fun to shoot, especially compared to the 460. My grouping was about 1" or less @ 50yds and 2"@100. Pretty decent for a *handgunner. Here is a pictre of her all setup: ![]() I set off the following weekend for my first handgun deer. Here is the story as I resurect it from a hunting baord Im on. Well it was a nice way to begin the new year for sure! I slipped back into a creek bottom this morning and setup well before daylight in hopes of bagging a doe with my pistol. I was there maybe 20 minutes when I seen one right at daybreak. It looked like a nice size nanny so I took aim and dropped the hammer. It was about a 65yard shot and from the tell tale kick, I connected. I watched as she ran about 25 yards and rolled up. (that 7-08 is a bad lil round * 8) I let her lay awhile and slipped out to check on her. As I walked up I was a little disappointed that it was instead a little spike. * :-/ *I am still very excited and its a trophy to me because its my first, but I really didnt want to shoot any little bucks on this property. It was just so early and I probably should have waited for a little more light. I was so pumped it was hard to hold back! I couldnt believe how hard it was to steady that handgun on just a "doe". * :o It felt like I had a bow in my hand I was so excited. * :D I will just get me a doe next time! *8) Either way it was a great day and I got some fresh meat on ice!!! Shot placement was great, right through the boiler room. 8) *Weight was 92# Here are a couple pics. ![]() The "beastly" rack. Wunder what he'll score? *2-2.5" gross? * *:D ![]() I love this handgunnin stuff!! WOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!! __________________________ Well not long after I ran into a buddy selling a complete stainless Encore pistol with a nice Weaver scope and a 15" barrel in 7mm-08. I really wanted the all stainless setup, but I didnt want mama to cut off my marbles. *:o With that in mind I DELICATELY approached her and explained my "dilema". To my surprise she took the bait and ran with it. *??? As for why, I am not sure. I have been sleeping with one eye open though and checking my coffee cup rim for *residue. He and I struck a deal so I got her and sold the old blued barrel and scope. Here she is.....7-08 with 2.5-8x28 Weaver scope ![]() This one groups even better. With some new Federal Fusion ammo I am getting sub 1" groups @100 yards. 8) I am yet to take a deer with the new one. I am hunting a big deer that is scraping all over my property and giving me the slip on a regular basis. He is making me look like a real jackazz. (as if I need any help doing that)I got two more weekends of season here and then Ill be done. If I dont get him this year maybe he will be there next year. Unfortunately he will be a little smarter. Time doesnt seem to deal me that same luxury. ::) I did kill a fox last weekend that I planned on mounting. Here is a pic: ![]() Unfortunately, he was damaged too bad for a mount. This pic is his good side. You dont want to see the other one. *:-[ (note to self: DONT shoot a fox with a 300 mag.) *::) As season comes to a close on deer I will shift my aim towards squirrels and hogs in Feb. A friend of mine is loaded with wild hogs and from the way things look I stand a pretty good chance of getting in on that action then. After that I got a few boat "repairs" to do on the Hooker and Ill be eagerly awaiting some fishing this year. *8) Oh and here is a sticker I got for my truck. Figured you Lab guys would like that. ;) ![]() Love yall...Stinky out!! 8)
