restoring gel coat methods

I still hear two diffrent schools of thought on trying to get back a shine on a heavy oxyidised hull. I'm talking no reflection and a white palm after running your hand over it. One is the sandpaper veryfine grit many grades or rubbing compound then finness. Has anybody brought back a shine using this or anyother method?
