Default Transom repair

Hey guys!
I discovered some wet ply wood in the bilge area of my '82 V20 Fisherman....
I have seen videos of removing the metal cap in the transom area and using an electric chain saw removing the damp wood and replacing with Seacast liquid..(basically, inserting the saw blade in the 1 1/2" thick area where the engine mounts)
Any thoughts?
Thank you,
Colin
