One quick thought. Like you said, you're new to the boating world, so maybe you don't know this. I'm not trying to throw water on your parade, but in NJ at least, it's against the law for children under 12 to be on a boat without wearing a life preserver... and it's just good common sense too. I appreciate the heads up. As long as i understand the law right, in Florida they only need to be wearing a life jacket if the vessel not anchored and in motion, and if the children are under 6 years old. Unless we are more than 9 miles offshore, then they must wear at all times. So basically i have them wear them until we anchor.
