did mine about 2 years ago, wasn't that hard. i would recommend the nfb system(no feedback). closest you can get to hyd without the expense. i got the helm & cable at west marine and they matched the lowest internet price i found. as far as the length, you old cable will have a number on it that will tell you the length. a lot of members here have done it and had to move motor, but on mine i don't have to. i did find it easier to remove the rod box and feed the helm & stern from the middle. good luck
