Stripers on Lead-Core Line

Leavin' later this mornin' to Lake Murray...hearin' stripers are hot on lead-core line pullin' jigs and certain lures...we'll fish tonite as long as they're bitin', spend the nite and go back at it Sat mornin'...

Gotta get goin'...will post reults on return...ya'll stay cool... 8)...

Up here we use either leadcore or stainless wire line for trolling. The stainless is more popular for downriggers but not exclusively. I like the leadcore for keeping the gear simpler. I like a 7' rod in the 40lb class with a Penn 330GTi levelwind reel. Smaller reels can be used, but I like that size for Striper fishing in the salt. Mount that in one of those horizontal side riggers, slow down to 2-4 knots max and bump the bottom. 8) ;)

Put the V in at the Murray dam around 4:30...water is down, ramp a little difficult...never even got on plane...let 3 lines out after gettin' in deep enough water...eased around, low idle and draggin' 2 buckets about 2 mph...trolled til dark...put 3 stripes over the gunwales...biggest 30'', 2 smaller... :)...didn't zackly set the woods on fire...

Gonna get back to it at sunrise in the morning and we'll see what happens..might have to run to some other ''holes'' to see if we can do a little better...

We're lettin' out about 8-12 ''colors" (10 yrds ea color)...25' mono leader and tiing on 1 oz. Roadrunner jigs w/ a sqirrley-tail worm...when they're hot, they slay this rig...hopin' it heats up in the mornin' :) ;D ;D...

Put the "V" back in the water 6:30 this a.m. ...started RAINING around 7:30...deploy top and raingear...E wind to about 18 or so comin' right off the dam; about a 2-3 mi fetch from where we were...LUV this boat...it just did it's job bustin' thru the whitecaps and draggin' that lead-core...most other boats left...we were WET-TO-THE-BONE by finish around 1 or so...ended up w/ total of 9 stripes in the box, biggest 12.5 lbs, a 10 and the rest smaller..lost about a 8 lber at the boat due to "failure-to-Boga" ::) ... :-/ ...anyway, got together w/ some guys hadn't seen inna while an' got some fishin' done... ;D ;D...

CB...I like the 330 for lead-core-trollin' ;) ...however the day I bought 3 reels specificly for this, I's feelin' CHEAP and went w/ Penn's 309s...didn't really expect much, but they've held up well for about 5-6 years now...no failures or issues on any of the 3...TTFN ;) ;D...

Oh yeah...that biggest fish hit a Red-Fin (chrome w/ blue back) lure... ;)...

Great Catch!!

Wire is the only way to go if you want to catch bass!

But I hate doing it!! You have to let out 300 feet of wire and Jig Jig Jig, till you catch!!

But if your not catching or you are comercial, then its the best thing you can do to insure that you are going to catch!!

I use a coustom made by me:

Lamiglass BT 85 7S, 7' rod. With a Penn 113HS

tx for the tips guys. peeps here (south mississippi) just dont fish for stripers AT ALL. so it is hard for me to gain any knowledge on how to catch them. here the water is muddy and shallow. 10 to 12 feet in the deeper spots, 4to 5 in most. thats in the bays. deeper out front but, not a lot. you realy gotta look to find water deeper than 15 to 20 foot within 15 or so miles from shore. but i know that local DMR hasbeen stocking the rivers and bays with stripe bass for a few years now. i also know that our state record is only 7.? pounds. i figure this might be my best shot at a state record. so any info you guys wanna share would be great. tx

My buddy lives right near you in Long Beach. But he doesn't fish.

He loves going out on my V20 when he comes N in the summer, he comes back every year.

He works or the TV station in Bollix, he is a master control op.

With that little Bass down there, its hard to say what will work on them??

Other then artificials, we use: sand eels, eels, porgy, scup, squid, mackerel

You can live line the eels, scup, porgy if you can find them. All will work chunking!

Here I like to use braided line, Spiderwire Stealth 65# test, It is equall in size to 16 # test.

In a boat I use 20# test Florocarbon leader of at least 6 feet long.

I am also a big fan of a good hook makes the difference between catching or losing!!
I use anything from 2 to 7/0 Gamakatsu Octopus!

Use the small with sandeels and a egg sinker, or use the 6/0 and a fish finder rig for chunking.

There arew so many things to do, but for what you have, that will get you started.

tx MJ. i think if i can catch one and cut him open that will help. i just gotta find out what they eat around here. that and learn thier habits. i know up north they run into the rivers to spawn in the fall. cant be too different here. and i am sure they get a lotbigger than 7 pounds. this could be my ticket to a record catch. tx
