Cedar Key is West of Gainesville (roughly) on the gulf coast. IF you go there, and you go to a BAR.... try the mullet dip... most of the local bars there serve it (at least they used to).
I know you think it's just a baitfish, but the dip is good. If you guys are already in the armpit (the gulf coast where the panhandle reaches the penisula), not far from Cedar Key is the Steinhatchie River. You'd have to check, season and all, but you used to be able to pick up tons of Scallops in the mouth there.... in about 5-6 ft of water. We'd usually get our bag limit (5 gallon bucket) in about 40 minutes on a good day. Another suggestion if you get any scallops, don't try to shuck them yourselves (we did a few times and a 5 gallon bucket took us hours and hours). Then my friend found out that if you stopped by the trailer park there where the "scalloper's wives" sit and shuck all day long, you can drop your bucket off and for something like $10-$15 they'll shuck them for you (we'd drop them off, go to a bar for some beers and come back in an hour and they'd be done. WELL worth it. Damn, I wish I still had the numbers (from 12 years ago) of my old Grouper Holes off Cedar Key, I'd send them to you guys. Have fun guys.
