| Fiberglass Fabrication pricing

So I have my T-Top canvas at the upholsterer right now getting a new one made up but I figured I'd also look into hard tops. Talked to a "friend" today who works for a fiberglass company and he told me for a 5x7 canopy with no electronics box or and fancy bells and whistles I am looking at $1400. That seem right? That's $40/sq.ft. I could of swore a few years back getting a quote on a inboard motor cover made for a family members work boat and it was around $16 a foot. That was gelcoated and all. Prices really went up that much in a few years??

Sounds $teep but really depends on what its made of and whether you need it to support a person. My top has a 1" honeycomb core with glass and gelcoat on both sides. Total overkill. It was $3200 including the whole aluminum structure and 6 rod holders, installed in 2002? I think I've seen 1/4" solid fiberglass tops...dunno how much$$

This is just 1/4" or so of fiberglass. Not made to support anything. Seemed steep to me too.

sounds outrageous to me.like hiway robbery to be truthfull. a piece of foamboard, one layer of biax and one layer of chopstrand... fair it and paint it. couple hundred bucks and a days labor and you can have something nice if youre handy. i couldnt see letting a shop make a grand profit for that little bit of work

my freind that builds T tops sells a complete fiberglass top(no legs, just the fiberglass part) with an integerated electronics box for about that money. A separate e box sells for around $500. Ive seen him buiuld a top with an aluminum hoop on top, then order a sheet of prefinished glass, it comes in various thickness and gel coated on both sides. Usually about 1/4 thick. He cuts the glass to fit, gels the raw edge with some extra gel and a paint bursh, it turns out real nice
