A group 24 starting battery should be MORE than enough for starting that engine.

You should not need more than a group 24. Also keep in mind the added weight and size of anything larger. May not fit where you keep battery.

Do you have 2 starting batteries?

I got my last one at Auto Zone. Much cheaper than West Marine. I'm surprised Wally doesn't have them. They have deep cycles I know.

I don't know the right answer, if there is one.
I get a dual purpose because the boat is in the water 24 hours a day for 6 months at the mercy of the bilge pump. When fishing, I drift or anchor for hours with the motor off and the electronics running (and the running lights that I forgot to turn off after sunrise)
I like the idea of 2 batteries but I have never needed 2....yet...
When my battery has gone bad (three since 1999), I noticed it when I got aboard and it was weak when lowering the motor or the bilge pump wasn't working.
And batteries only last 5 or 6 years so thats a lot of extra money for not much benefit.

You need a group 24 starting battery, I sell Deka batteries and have had good luck with them. Deep cycle battereis are for trolling motors or battery banks, dual purpose do neither job well. Deka makes West marine battereis and Battereis Plus Duracell( best place I know to get them retail). I sell the 24M7 1000 MCA no maintance battery, its overkill for you engine, but you'll never regret having it. I think batteries plus gets $89 for that battery, west gets $144 for it. 850 MCA will do the job for you, but doens't leave a lot of reserve

Sams club by me has the deka group 24 starting battery for $65 I believe. Wal mart sells johnson controls which is the same battery that 85% of the others sell, east penn makes deka, and is a good battery. I still dont understand why wal mart sells johnson controls, and sams sells duracell(deka), but I'm not complaining when they sell a better battery for less money. Sams sells the group 29(its a group 31 with a smaller base to fit in a group 27 tray) for around $100. Probably going to change out the batteries in the new to me boat soon with a 29 for the trolling motor, and a 24 for the engine.
