Default Anybody running a 115hp on a V20

Just came across a V with a 2004 115 Yamaha 4 stroke.
Can anyone give me an idea what cruise and WOT should be with 115hp?
Usually it's just me and my wife on the boat.

I would prefer a 150 but 2004 115 Yamaha is certainly interesting especially after replaced the trim motor on a 1992 50 hp Yamaha last Thursday. Two bolts heads snapped off. Took over two hours working with vise grips to get them out.
Those older motors can really try your patience.

Thanks for any help guys.

Can you get a test drive - that would show lift onto plane, cruise speed, and full speed.

Back in the 70's many 20' boats were rigged 100- 135 hp, so a 115 is not freaky small.

Figure maybe 20-25 cruise speed, 30+ full speed .

With full fuel, gear, and 4 people wouldn't be fast, but still likely get up on plane ok.

Thanks Bgreene,
I have sent the owner an email.
Asking about the stuff not listed in the ad. The year of the boat and if there are titles available for trailer and boat and any extra photos that can be sent to me.

The ad states that motor is in great running condition. I would like to check transom,
foredeck and cockpit. I would then look into getting a sea trial.

Just thought I would get any input here from you guys.

Getting all the info I can before going to look at it.

WELLCRAFT factory rigged them with 115's, so it is within the needed HP to push one. Mine had a 1.6L SEA-DRIVE which was a 115HP flywheel rated outboard, and it would push the V on plane, but definately felt underpowered. Cruised in the low 20's, and topped out in the mid to upper 20's.

Thanks Ferm,

I guess Bgreene advise is spot on.
Take it for a test drive to see if we fine it acceptable.

Our old V had a 200 on it and it was awesome.
I really loved having all that power.

The dingy on the Bertram has a 15 hp on a 8'10" RIB.
It's scary fast. I can't really hold it wide open without it getting squirrel.
But it is a sick kind of fun!

You probably know this already, but here's how I've generally pursued the boat's I've bought:
1. Call seller - for generally discussion, and ask your general questions..such as
boat history, any work done to it, is transom and deck solid, and what the boat needs.

2. Then if all sounds good, visit the boat to check it out. If seller is there, ask to go aboard and start poking around. Look for all the important things - hull, bottom, transom etc,, then same for inside. Take your time.......look closely.

3. If all still good, ask for test ride - assuming you're really interested to potentially buy.
Seller should be ok with this - assuming suitable water nearby.
Check how boat sits in water - flat or lean ? Deep or proper ? Scuppers above or under water ? Gauges work ?
Ask to drive.........slow to idle, then throttle up to note how it lifts onto plane...... correctly or sluggish ? Check steering - smooth left / right or not ?
Engine - compression check, any receipt history, hours, work done ? Starts nicely, runs smooth ?

Good luck ..........it is a bit of a process..........to avoid mistakes, and anything " hidden."

Went and looked at that boat Sunday.
The transom seemed solid but the rest of the boat was rough.
The Yamaha had a 20" leg.
I mentioned the shaft length it to the owner and he played dumb or was/is dumb.

I'll keep looking.........

Some V's had a 20" transom and some had a 25" transom. So long as teh motor is correct for the transom, theres no issue.
