Default Opinions on Yamaha Vx250

I find a lot of people saying that the 250HP OX66 motors are the best but what about the non OX66? Are they just as good?

I'm looking at a 2000 Vx250 that is in pieces and needs a head, two pistons, and two holes cleaned up at least.

A 2000 should be an OX66 fuel injected engine. Don't think you could get a carbed engine past 98 from YAMAHA in the large V-6. There all pretty good engines, but are THIRSTY like the old V-8 OMC's.

Ferm,

It is fuel injected and looks just like the OX66, just no O2 sensor from what I can tell.

I've decided to get the motor no matter what. It would be a swap for some stuff I am owed. I'm sure I could part it out for what I'd be into it for.

The motor lost the ring land on two piston and parts of the broken ring dinged up one head. The cylinders look like they are not too bad with maybe just aluminum smeared on the walls.

The powerhead was taken apart 3 years ago and left that way so it would be somewhat of a jigsaw puzzle to put back together.

My biggest concern is the crankshaft. It was in a garbage bag but there is some light tan rust spots on a few journals. It looks like just surface, no pitting but should I be worried? I can post pics if needed.

It looks like rebuild kits can go for $1200 to $1500. I'm guessing machine work around $500?

I've got one of the old carbed ones out in teh shed, and it is sitting there because I can't justify spending the money to build it as that is one expensive engien to build up. If you need it I have a good crank and rods out there.

Ferm,

Check your PM's.

I don't know if this is going to be cost effective to rebuild but I don't think I want to take a chance on the crank. There are a bunch of small (1/8" to 3/16") rust "stars" that I can polish of but they leave discoloration which I'm afraid will turn into a pit.

I need to borrow a better camera to get a good photo.
