those houses didn't just catch on fire, they burned all the way down! living in match sticks. Must be real dry and windy for it to burn like that

That's what a firestorm does.. it consumes everything that can burn. I've always thought that if I ever lived close to a forest like that I'd put a dry sprinkler system on my roof. If every one of those houses that burned had a roof flooded with water I wonder how many of them might have been saved? It wouldn't have to be much, just a pipe running along the ridge with several heads. Remember the canyon fires in California a few years back...we saw the same kind of destruction...except for ONE house, still standing, right in the middle of all those houses that had been burned to the ground... it was a Mexican style home and had a tile roof. Tile doesn't burn. If you can keep your roof from burning you have a good chance of saving your house.

They actually make systems for doing just that.. (cooling) You can knock 40 - 60 degrees F. off the rooftop temp. by installing a misting system. It turns on, wets the roof, and shuts down.. then at a set time it does the same thing..over and over.. Evaporative cooling is a proven fact (that's why we sweat) and by reducing the heat load on your roof you can extend the life of the roof and lessen the heat load on your A/C system significantly. All for a relatively minor cost.

A system installed to an angled water curtain towards the peak of the home would give protection to every side of the home plus the roof.Hard to figure why more people don't install this type of system.
feel bad for those who have lost their homes.I was out west a few years bck and sawhow bad the destruction from those fire can be.Those wildfire firefighters sure earn their pay!

My son and I (and 22 other Scouts and Scouters on our way to Philmont) were in Colorado Springs a couple days before that fire...glad we missed it.

It was VERY dry out there, out on the trail in places the dirt was like 10x confectioners sugar.

I don't know about residential areas, but down here in Charleston County, the county charges extra tax and water use in commercial buildings if you have a sprinkler system, not that you used it, but just that you have one, and since the Sofa Super Store fire, they are requiring more commercial building to have them. You would think by having a fire safety system, you would be rewarded, not penalized
