toyota surf oil pressure problems
hi guys just thought ill throw some questions on a toyota surf 2.4l turbo diesel i bought for my son .I tryed on some toyota forums with no luck.OK the problem with it is the oil pressure is way too high at idle like 100psi.SO far i have taken out the 2 pressure relief valves from the side cover and the pressure is the same i alsor checked the oil cooler in the block and blew in it with my mouth and did seemed blocked. I will try another one on it but dout thats the problem.THe engine needs to be freshen up but i want the problem sorted out before i do a rebuild .im also goint to try fitting a hose to the oil pressure swich hole and attach a ball valve to it and return the hose it the valve cover and see if pressure drops down
 hoping some one out there has come across the same problem any help would be good

hook up a mechanical gauge to it and double check the pressure reading. I'n not sure what a Surf is an don't know anything about the engine. But before I did any thing else, I'd check the pressure against another gauge

A Surf is the Australian equivalent of the 4Runner.

What year is she? I'd love to have a diesel 4Runner, I've got the 3.0 (read three point slow) v6 in my '94.

yes i have another gauge connected on her i bought the car with this problem as it been threw 2 others peoples hands and mechanics and all have gave up with it .trying to avoid pulling the engine out i will try another oil coiler today been trying to find a drawing on the net of the oil path in the engine but no luck ill try and keep u up to date

What is the oil pressure cold? What is it hot? Does it go higher if you give it throttle? Do you know what the oil pressure spec is for the bypass valve? Is it a dump to sump or dump to pump bypass valve? I know my DURAMAX will hit 75-80 when cold at an idle with 5W40 oil in it. Some small diesel engines will run some pretty high oil pressure in them at an idle when cold as well. The 5.9L CUMMINS in 98 when they went to the 24 valve engine went ot a dump to pump bypass valve, and these engines would hold 110 pounds of oil pressure cold, but only 40 or so hot. The previous gen of engine with a dump to sump bypass valve would peg out around 85-90 cold though, and run about 40 hot.

at idle 100psi if u just touch the throttle it bends the needle . if you let it get hot at idle it wont go past 80psi it pops the oil filter seal if u try to drive it cold i took the pressure relief valves out and still the same the pressure should drop down with them out finally got a hold od a drawing of the oil circut ill try and post it

This is probably NOT the answer, but...Pressure rises as galleys get restricted. Todays ultra hot engines sludge the oil and coat the galleys quicker than in days of yore. I don't know the engine, or anything about it, but I would check and make sure that all the oil passageways are clean. If it is a blockage or restriction it will be after the oil pressure gauge pickup. Just my 2 cents.
