hey guys, hope someone can help figure something out on this, its a long story but basically i bought a 92 nissan 15hp for a kicker, it had been sitting for a while, couple of years, but had good compression and was a good price. got it home and cleaned carb. was getting a weak intermittant spark, then no spark. so replaced cd box coil and spark plugs, cleaned grounds, and still nothing. getting power from exciter coil and trigger coil, can tell with old cd by putting a test light to the coil lead, but soon as i hook it to the coil, nothing. new cd has coil built in. not sure where to go from here. its an electric start ns15b2. appreciate any suggestions here. im about ready to cut my losses and use it as an anchor.

Does that thing have a kill/stop button? If so disconnect it and see if it improves.

i did, it is disconnected, i have also pulled the flywheel cleaned grounds under it and checked magnets. no improvement. could itbe an overgrounding issue, or a short in the starting/charging system causing a problem. the only thing shared between the systems is ground. parts for this thing are extremely difficult and expensive to get, and cant locate the coils. is it possible to substitute the stator coil for the exciter coil? to test

I'm sorry, I've got no better suggestion due to my lack of experience with Nissan.

Is there a way i can test the output of the exciter and trigger coils? the resistances check out, but dont know how to test output. have no issue buying tools as long as it isnt some special brand specific thing that only works with a select group of motors. i would really like to get this thing running halfway decent. the main motor is a 78 johnson 175, its never left me stranded, but like the extra security of having something to get me back to dock. not to mention its striper season and the johnson is awfully thirsty to do much trolling.

ok update, got spark, was a brand new bad spark plug causing all the problems, swapped in another new one and shocked the crap outta myself. started motor, tries to run counterclockwise, backwards. is that a timing issue? or is there something else i should try

hard to say im not familiar with nissans. you might have either the plug wires switched around or you have something switched under the fly wheel. Before you do that make sure that the flywheel is lining up top dead center. that will make sure you didnt put the flywheel on wrong. I looked at the schematic and it seems pretty hard to put back together wrong. are the coils under the flywheel adjustable? Maybe try the wires, In the schematic they show that the bottom goes to top and the top to bottom. I'm grasping at straws here. |

both plugs fire at the same time on this motor, so doesnt matter wich spark plug wire is top and bottom.i pulled flywheel, everything looks good, double checked all wiring. the coils are not adjustable. i've set top dead center and lined up the gaps in the magnets on the flywheel with the trigger coil, tried again, still running reversed. so i started playing with the timing plate adjustment, tried it at full advance and full retard and about 6 places in between and still tries to kick the motor backwards. so im thinking its the trigger coil shorting out internally, the resistance test on it shows the resistance at 57 specs say between 30-45. is there any old school, not in a manual, test or solution for the trigger. cant find anywhere that sells them, and nervous about making one myself and hooking it to a 200 dollar cd box.

decided to say screw it, picked up a johnson cd2 box and trigger. those are cheap and plentiful, and will serve my purpose for testing wether the trigger is bad or not. might not get it to run right, but can atleast se if that makes it try to run in the right direction. if it does, i'll either try the johnson trigger, wich has the same output voltage, or send mine off to be rebuilt
