Default f100 5.8 towing a v20 uphill

well my poor old girl struggled pulling my v20 upa big hill started to get reall hot doing 50mph in 3rd gear looks like i have to spend some money on her too well she is older than my v20 so what do i expect

THat doesn't sound so good, my '69 f-100 with a 360 (same block, right?) hardly notices the v back there, until you try to stop!

my brakes work well on the trailer 360 never heard of a 360 ford v8 well mine runs on lpg u call it propane kills the horse power quite abit

The old 360 is the second smallest big block Ford. Not counting the special HD truck engines it was something like 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428, 429 then the 460. The 360 and 390 had low-rise heads and an almost flat intake runner angle, so didn't make power much past 4K, but they're stump pullers. The 360 was only available in trucks.

The 5.8 is probably a 351 Windsor motor, very similar to the old 5.0 engine, but with higher deck height. The heads and cams are slightly different but will interchange to a 5.0 or 302 in cid. I've pulled a V20 with much less, that 5.8 should be plenty if it's running right unless it's a victim of a 3.00 gear ratio as many were.

the hill im talking about most big trucks drop to 35mph the hill is about 4 mile long my radiator needs replacing its only 18 years old and the truck hasnt worked that hard for a few years

See if you can find a cool dual 1 1/4" core radiator for it as that will increase your cooling capacity ALOT. Also maybe invest in a set of dual electric fans for her. Was the fan clutch roaring away at yeah going up the hill? If not maybe you just need to clean the rad out and replace the old fan clutch ast hey do need to be replaced about every 5 years or so. Not sure what size fan you have, but maybe a HD fan clutch and one of the newer composite plastic fan blades would fix your problem.

ok ill check if my head gaskets r leaking or the heads r cracked there r the 3 ways i check them

(1) get engine hot remove all sparkplugs and burn your hands and place a screwdriver in each cylinder then after a min check for moisture on the screwdriver

(2) we call it TEE KAY HEAD TESTER

(3) a gas analiser in the raditor filler to see if any exhaust gases r present

it all is good then ill buy a new larger core radiator and fit themo fans os a falcon and a switch to turn them on of a 88 ford laser they r a one wire switch that supplys earth to the relay

and yes my truck has a clutch fan on it

well winter is getting close now so it can wait a while as im poring money into my boat

A simple quick check is to check the cooling system once the engine has sat overnight to cool off. If it is holding ANY pressure you have a head gasket leaking. Also check the overflow and the radiator under teh cap for any signs of oil or burned appearance.

I Wonder you said that your speed with the 3.7 was very slow and now your truck cant pull a hill with the v in tow ..Just a though ,,i wonder if your foam under the floor is totally saturated and water loged this would add hunderds of unwanted pounds to the boat whick may cause both problems
