| merc v6 drop in vs 488 merc 4 cyl

fellas, today found a v 6 merc 1985 185hp 2bbl in good shape. can this be hooked up to my existing alpha 1 outdrive do not know gear ratios, is there a special adapter for the exhausts from one to twin exhausts that i can purchase? the v6 comes with a alpha 185 outdrive but do not know its condition however my old alpha is fine. enclosed are serial #s of new v6 and would you confirm the yrs, i come up with 1985-87 vintage. #s a-606535 and a615895 outdrive on outside port side center had a640426 and back plate said alpha one 185. appreciate your comments. bythe way my 4 cylinder 488 develops 220 hp where the v6 is 185 hp. do you feel there will be any noticable speed or performance differences. thanks again richard

Your gonna have to install a new Y-pipe for the V6. Speed and performance, well ya just cut your HP by 35 so your gonna loose a little speed but may gain some fuel mileage. Go to perfprotech.com and type in your serial #'s. They will give ya gear ratios and such about your old and new set-ups. Your gear ratio in the 488 drive should be fine. Good luck with the repower.
