Default *Real* Crappie Fishing Report 3/26/10

My Yukon is in the shop so Fly picked me up yesterday evening and off we went to my lake lot to fish on my pier.

Picked up 2 dozen minnows on the way. The game plan was to fish 2 ways - jig with artificial and also minnows under a bobber. The first half of the evening I put on a clinic - outfishing Flyfishin 12 to 0 with artificial only!! Toward the end Fly mounted a comeback and nearly caught me with 10 crappie - and the big fish award. Don't get me wrong, we did not catch any big fish, but Fly caught the biggest one at maybe 1/2 lb. Still a bit early for the big mammas.

I caught about 10 or so small bream as well on my jig and Fly added a few more, pushing our total early season catch to over 30 fish.

We were happy. Had one boat w/ 3 guys and a dog come by hitting all the docks with jigs and they said they hadn't even seen a crappie.

Right now the dogwood trees are showing buds. Soon they will bloom and it is always an indicator of when the big female crappies head to shallow water grass beds and brush piles full of roe. It will be game on in a week or two.

The kids caught some real nice Bluegills today off my pier.
They caught some smallmouth's and couple nice 2.5 lb largemouth bass as well.

I had to work today, got home in time to see them catch 3 of those nice bluegills.

Pics? What are pics?

Actually I did not have my phone or camera. Fly took one pic of the orange/purple sunset & sent it to me 'cause I remarked about how perty it wuz....but that was it.

Next time I'll take some pics.

Lee, do you ever eat any of the bluegills there (if big enough)? I don't believe the bream in our lake get very big at all. I've never caught one big enough to eat. I think the flat heads take em out before they can get very big.

We eat them, the nice ones are 10-12" long and 5-6" wide, say the size of a nice croker.

When I woke up this morning and it was raining cats and dogs I put on my slicker and went out there with my micro mini and caught 1 avg small mouth and 1 big nice yellow perch about same size as the big bluegills.

In another couple of weeks the white perch will move in n masses and I'll be out there everyday when I come in from work, a spinner bait with a small piece of shrimp, they can't stand it, I'll be reelin 1 in and see another bump him tryting to get him to spit it out so he can have it.

Cool. You've got it made out there for sure. I love catching the big ocean fish but there's also nothing quite like catching the bream, perch and crappies on ultra-lite tackle. We also like to hit em up with a fly-rod. Now that is fun.
