Default bump and grind

oh boy im so upset
i went out fishing this week[wed] and cleaned up on blues, had a great time BUT, I have to take her to the repair shop
when i put her in reverse and give her gas the motor makes a thumps or bumps i wrote about this before and didnt do anything about it
she still runs but i dont like the sound
also when i first go do and trim uo the engine it make a loudwhining sound like theres air in the system. i filled it up and put the cap on tight but still no good
and i just replaced the steering tube and the steering is great
the thumping sound has me nervous i dont want it to break down i dont know what it could be

Step it is hard to tell by the description of course, but when I had theat before it was because the shift rod needed to be adjusted, the lock nut on the rod had vibrated loose and it was not quite making full engage lock up.
hopefully it is something like that for you

Probably just needs readjusting on the cable, or the cable could be getting worn and not fully engageing the gears.

I hope it turns out to be a minor problem for you step.....but......The one and only Merc I owned did something very similar. At no more than 1/4 throttle it would suddenly feel as if I was bouncing the motor off a bunch of rocks. I quickly threw it in neutral and felt the knot in my stomach swell. Long story short the "clutch dogs" in the lower unit were shot. Have you looked at your lower unit oil lately? Hope it's only a minor thing for ya Step, as I recall fixing it wasn't cheap. Best of luck.

phester,nothings cheap anymore
from what my friends are telling me[you guys] i hope its only an adjustment on the cable.Im bringing it to anglers marine in seabright nj there the best around as for the noise on the trim im afraid it might be more than alittle grease but i want to fix the problems. If i can hold off on the trim for now i will wait but the bumping from the engine i have to fix cause i know something is not right
ill keep you informed and let you know how it turns out for future refferance

i hope its not to much money my wife is going to kill me
so if you go on craiges list in a couple of weeks and see a 1978 steplift for sale you know she won but i dont think that would come to that
