Easy!!
Are you changing springs also??
when you undo the u bolts holding the axle there is a pin in the springs that fits into a hole on the axle or the axle has a spring seat welded to it and the spring sits in it.
No brain needed just some muscle and a good grinder for the rusted bolts.

Ok good. just didn't know about how to true it. was scared i couldn't get it on straight and the trailer would fish tail or wear the tires.

When he gets the new axle make sure he gets the same size, they measure them so many different ways!
Over all leanth, axle not including the spindles, and spring mounts, bring the old one with you if possible. Or ask the guy were you are buying how to measure.

For the most part you can't true one. They are made certain lengths, widths, cambers for given trailer needs.
There should be a divit or hole about 5/16" round for the spring bolt to rest in, in the axle.
Biggest thing (besides getting the correct length) I would be concerned with is that the axles have the same size bearings.
Like MJ says, spring center to center measurements have started being the standard, but spindle lengths can still be different, especially on the real heavy duty axles and some list hub face dimensions.

measure up spring centers, hub face to hub face, axle tube size and bearing size. those are all the measurements you should need.
