chum, you emailed this to me about 2 years ago. this is the adjustment for the cable that goes to the outdrive.
ferm, i adjusted the cable shown as much as it would go. the other cable is the problem. it still grinds a bit going into reverse. how do i adjust the cable from the controls to the bracket so i can get more of a positive shift into reverse? ![]() HHEEEEELLLLLPP ? ? ? ? ? ?

Have you tryed moving the bolt up in the slot to allow for more travel yet? If not I would do that and then readjust forward to get some more engagement.

If it hasn't allready been done, it may be time to replace the shift shaft in the lower unit, its not a hard job, you will need one special tool, but there are ways around that. If it has the original shift shaft, it may have corroded enough to allow slop in the splines, casuing you to not have enough travel to achieve proper shifting, there are several other reason for the shifting to be out, but this is a good place to start

I would start by removing the cable from the control, and then see how much play you have in the actual shifting mechenism. Then if you find quite a bit of slck, check to see if you can find out where it is at. It could be that the shift shaft bushing inside the bellhousing is just worn out and sloppy. You may still have the old style bushing in your current unit which won't take much wear.

Check the arm circled in red to see if it is loose on the shaft or if the roller in the end is broken. Then check to see if you have the large bushing like pictured circled in blue, or if you have a small bushing. Another area to check is where the yellow arrow is pointing. The cable could be loose and moving back and forth inside behind the allen screw.

Just because it's new, don't meen there aint somethin wrong in there. If it's all new, I would check the part with the yellow arrow. I went through this on the SEA RAY last year. The cable loosened up in there after being shifted a few times, tightened that allen up and all was good.

you are supposed to tighten the allen screw then back off till the slide will rotate freely, this keeps it from bindig up, there should be little to no end play in the slide. If you drop your lower unit to do a water pump, look at the shift shaft, make sure its stainless(shiney looking), look at the splines real carefull to make sure they aren't corroded. before mercruiser changed to stainless, i used to replace them all the time for sifting issues
