Default Just an idea

An idea I've been I've been running thru my mind for quite a while. Anyone else have an opinion or input. I've been thinking about putting covering boards on the aft deck and gunnels of my 81 V. The idea came to sprout after I realized my gunnel rod holders are going to protrude down into the rod storage lockers. I figured I could space the holders up some with a piece of teak or epe'. then I got to thinking, if I layed a plank of epe' down the side like the coaming boards on the big sportys. It wouldn't cover the entire gunnel cap, just from the outer edge to the ridge( maybee 4" wide). I would stop it about where the windshield side windoiws start and run it all the way back to the transom. Just an idea, welcome any opinions

I have coaming pads that are off a 29 Wellcraft Coastal. *I love them, *I like to lean against the side of the boat when I'm fishing and they are super comfortable. *They also make the boat look sharp. *If you check Boaters World they have a decent set. *I though about making them but I wanted the pleated vinyl and the stuff's expensive. *Try a search on Ebay for coaming pad, coaming cushion thats how I found mine.

I have some pictures with them mounted, I have to upload them from the camera.

nah, I'm talking about on the deck, where you would walk if you were walking on the gunnels, or gunwhales to the purist

I see what you mean now. I have thought about trying to add some kind of wood to the same area you are describing. Mainly I like to sit on the gunwale and that ridge is uncomfortalble. There was a boat posted in the For Sale Forum not that long ago that had the modification you are looking for. It looked real good.

I think it'd look great, Spare...would addin' that thickness (how thick?) to the top of the gunwales keep the bottoms of the rod-holders outta the rod-boxes?...if so, I'd say go for it...

...now for me, it'd be a Starboard solution, juss cuz I'm a lazy-a$$, no-count lowlife who doesn't like refinishin' wood from time to time ::) ... and if I's doin' it w/S'board, I'd make an individual plate to go under each rod-holder insteada all the way mid-ship to stern...but like I said...that's just me ;) ...

starboard's not my thing, i use too much of it on a dailey basis on all the couch boats I work on. Probably would leave the wood natural( its taboo to oil the wood around the cockpit on sportys), i like the way it looks. Thought about just spacing the rod holders up with individual spacers, but I got to thinking too hard and came up with this idea. I've got 6 Pompanette rod holders for my boat, two of them are shorter than the other four, they will go halfway up the side as they will prbaly be the ones that are more in the way of the rod storage, teh other four will be located futher fwd and aft. Right now, I'm just looking fwd to getting back to qork on the boat, I'm glad this season is over, its slowed down but stopped

Spare I've been thinking about the same thing.
I like the look that a big sportfishers cockpit has.

The sides would be easy. The stern looks more difficult on my '76 I/O conversion because it has a crown.

I think older Robalos had teak just on the sides.

You need to come to James Island and check out my "extreme project V".

Lunch is on me.
