I now have a 200hp merc bluewater series that when I try to raise it, the pump will run and never raise the motor but if I just lower it (just move it), then I can raise it.

What would cause that, is there a reservoir I can check?

Not sure about your Merc, but my 1990, 90 horse Merc had a fill under the motor when it was in the full up position.

When ever you get a new to you motor the first thing you should do is go get the book!! The best cash you will ever spend, I have one for all the motors I have ever owned.

Raise the engine up and you'll see a plastic screw(probably yellow in color), that will be your fill screw. Your probably out of fluid due to a leaking ram seal. I'm getting ready to rebuild one here soon for a ram seal leak. I'll try and get you a picture tommorrow of the fill plug.

I dont mean to hijack your thread, but, on both my 86 150 hp Yamahas in order to raise the engine one trim piston will fully extend then the other one will fully extend then the engine will raise. And if the motors are fully tilited and I want to let them down one trim piston will retract then the other one will retract, THEN the engine will go down. Is this right? It seems like a pain in the

The party I highlighted in red will happen if you put the engines on the tilt locks and then let the engine down on it and retract the hydraulics until it stops. The part I highlighted in blue sounds like your tilt tubes are hanging up slightly on the tilt bushings. The engines should be balanced so they want to fall downward with some force. If you remove the foot and go to trim the engine down, it will pull the trim pistons in because the engine is now off balance.

Neither engine has a tilt lock and both have thier lower units on them. Maybe its just Yamaha engineering.

To check them to see if it is the tilt tube bushings hanging them up. Trim the engines all the way up, then push the trim down switch. If the engines don't move right away, hold the trim down button until the outer 2 trim rams go down almost all the way. Release the button and go back and try and pull the engines down by hand. Feel for resistence while doing this. If you pull it down some and stop pulling and it stays there, then chances are your tilt tube or bushings are causing them to hang up. If the engine goes back up then it's YAMAHA engineereing. Just be careful when pulling them down by hand. If they start coming down, GET OUT OF THE WAY. You DON'T want it to come down on you.

My 175 Yamaha use to do the same thing for years!! One comes out to the motor and then the other, then they would both lift the motor.

Going down they came toghter till to the end with the motor, but if it was coming down with out the motor cause it was locked up, one would come down before the other.
