Students were rioting, holding sit ins things were just crazy.
But I believe as we got older we came to realize that a lot of what was happening we were wrong about, especially old hippies like me and Franco (not Ozzie he was WWII era).
Most young people as they get older and get some life experience change their opinions quite a bit, its life, its growing up. Unless you are a flaming liberal then you never quite get rid of the rose colored glasses.
The point I am making it is life experiences that shape you, just like what happened to Jason in his comments above. Yet I am sure Jason has also witnessed himself or at least heard of amazing things cops do everyday to help others, but that one circumstance gave him an initial response to this thread that was very negative.
That is why that officer in the video was so wrong, because he affected at least three young men for the rest of their lives.
well put

I hear ya, CY. My own kids talk to me in a way I NEVER WOULD HAVE DARED TO TALK TO MY DAD. Dad used corporal punishment in a fair manner, and only when necessary and appropriate. I have not done that with my kids at all out of fear that today's world would label me a child abuser rather than a good parent.

That video will affect untold 1000's of people who base their opinion of police on what the see on TV, either on the news or their favorite TV drama.

Most people never have any interaction with the police day to day, it is suprising to me how many people are shocked when they interact with me and find that I am polite and kind and helpful, even when giving them a ticket. Of course the level of kindness helpfulness drops dramatically when you call me a stupid SOB or the like.

Jason, you did not offend me, I understand that many people have unpleasant experiences with cops, for whatever reason.

I am not the cop that you hate and like I said above, I don't take statements like that personally. I would be willing to bet that if you spent 10 minutes with that cop under different circumstances, you would find that he isn't that bad after all.

I hope that you will keep an open mind and not lump all cops into one heap.

I have had the privelage of meeting willy, and you are right. One wise, sensible and respectful man. Glad we have the privelage of basking in his knowledge and fine taste in women on a day to day basis.

you know it had to be at least ten years ago working my normal 5pm to 4am shift I had an occassion coming back from another call to back up one of my newer officers on a car stop.
He had stopped this fellow from an adjoining town who turned out we knew because he was a big shot attorney who owned a Porsche Carrerra and thought it was his right to clock in about 75 to 80 when he traveled at night thru our town and he had gotten a couple of coupons from us in the past and gave the officers a real hard time when it went to court. He was 1 for two in that regard.
Well this particular night he was really talking down to the patrolman and trying to get his goat on tape to influence the judge for his future defence. I pulled the officer aside before the situation deteriated and told him if he wants to watch him stew just be as polite as he could possibly and issue him a coupon and wish him a good evening, which he did.
While he was in the car I stepped over to the drivers side and the fellow saw me and said hey Lieutenenant I did not realize it was you over there. I said yea just backing up my officer on a stop, I asked him why would he give a young officer such a hard time when he is doing exactly what he is supposed to be doing, you know what he said, because he is a cop.
Well about a month later I get a call from the neighboring towns Desk Lt. saying that they had what might be a run away or missing teen age girl age 14.
He told me that she had been hanging out with a 17 year old from our town, we knew him well, a piece of crap on two legs. The girl had been missing and had not gone to school that day and the parents were going nuts looking and calling everywhere.
I knew because of the sh!tbird she was hanging with would use anything to screw her or screw her up I called in two of the young go getters I had working that night and gave them the skinny and told them find him and they will find her. They spent about two hours looking around all his normal haunts and went to his house and the tramp mother had told them that he had not been home all day he was down in south jersey with his father.
They did not believe her but had to leave when she closed the door. Figuring he would chance it this officer went behind the house and saw a light coming from the detached garage and snuck over and looked in and saw people sitting inside and old car inside the garage. He called me on the radio and I told him go in and check, figuring I would come up with a good excuse later. He and the other officer went in and found her undressed in the car and passed out drunk and the sh!tbird kid and two of his equally talented friends getting ready to have at it with her.
They snatched their dead a$$es up and took her out and took her to HQ. and luckily they had not gotten further than what we saw.
We called the twon next door and I told the Lt. we got her send the parents over.
Well I had not made the connection with the comon name but guess who came over with his wife to pick up the daughter. Thats right Porsche Man.
He and the wife were praising us and the lawyer always being a lawyer was hearing from the tramp mother in the next room how shee was signing an internal affairs complaint against the young officer for trespassing on her property.
He asked me why he took a chance like that, I told him, because he was a cop.
Never had another problem with that fellow in town again. He plead guilty to the speeding ticket.
Life is always coming back around at ya

When I ever got in trouble with the law, and there has been a few I have always done nothing but show respect to the police!!
Even in the bar room fights I just stopped sat down and waited for them to cuff me and drag me away!
When I get stopped by the cop I don't even reach for my Lic till he is at the window and tells me to!
I even had a cop go off on me one time and I just let him rant while I said nothing!
But there was one time that I had one go off and I was close to popping him one!! I looked him right in the eye with looks of a killer! He asked what I was looking at, I just stared at him and said nothing, it was a fight I would not have won!! I just stared at him, he backed down and that was it, all over!

I have found that if you treat them like crap they going to treat you the same way!! And if they are yelling and screaming at you just let it go it will be better off for everyone!!
