I bought an '86 StepV last year with a 1987 Johnson 225 with a trailer and paid $4,900. The boat needed some work but overall it's been a great deal. I "grew up" with a 1974 StepV (165 OMC I/O) so I knew the model well and spent the better part of a year shopping for it. Last year we needed to replace the gas hose and the vent hose because of dry rot. The outboard needed a new starter and fuel pump but has been reliable at least for the first year. Your biggest expenes may be engine related.

My '89 with a trailer was $7500.00 3 years ago. *Count on Reelapeelin to catch those details. *It looks like the hatch is just slid forward. *Mine will do that. *I had to replace the rotten wood in the gas tank hatch. I would call this normal wear and tear for this boat.

Well I did the compression check and it looked good(only a 3 psi differential between the cylinders).
chumbucket thanks for the info on the other boat up by the rotary, I'm gonna be up that way tomorrow so I'll swing by and take a look. I'm also going to try and look at another one I saw in the paper today for $5500 with a trailer. macojoe thanks for the info on the tank hatch it's actually pretty solid feeling, the hollow sounding areas are immediatly on either side of it. It really doesn't feel delaminated or anything, more like the tank extends under that area? I did take some pictures, I'll try to get them up later tonite. Thanks again |

Looks like it's in nice shape. A Yamaha engine with good compression is worth a lot. Check Ebay for comparative values. The 150 should be good on fuel, but won't get you much past 38+/- MPH if that's an issue.

As for the motor looks like the same year range as mine (89) But I have a 175hp. I see you also have the dreaded trim motor rust! You will want to remove it, and wire brush it clean, I then painted it with ZRC paint. its 99% Zinc when dry, then top coat with Yamaha paint. It will then last for ever!! Left alone it will rust thur then you will be in the $hit
