The following is posted on my local Craigslist. What do you guys think about it? concerns?

My biggest immediate thought is how long did he gun it hot? and how did he figure out it was overheating? did the buzzer just go off and he shut it down or what. He claims its a looper..is it really? I emailed him and asked him if he knew anything about the compression and how he knew it was overheating and also a proposed trade. Thanks gentlemen.

But if you are looking for a parts motor then go for it. If you need and want a good running motor, keep looking! There have been ton's of good motors coming up as many are looking to repower there old boat or get a smaller motor that uses less fuel. Don't buy anothers problem!!

I have since spoken to the guy via email. He states he has no idea of the compression. When it was last on a boat the buzzer would sound. He says "its just a big paperweight to me" and is "entertaining all cash offers".

How does one listen to the bearings on an outboard with a large screwdriver?

Unless you are looking for parts forget about it!! You will spend more in repairs then its worth.

I exchanged a few more emails with the guy. I offered him $200. He said he already had on offer of $400. I don't even know that I would have given him that. I have a good 150 Merc already and any cash spent just cuts into my transom repair stash so, its just as well.

It wasn't on a boat or a stand so it can't be run and I would have bought it without knowing really anything about. I would love to have that motor if it was in good shape though. Yall be good.

with engine running, place the flat tip of the screwdriver directly against the engine block just where the bearings are, place your ear directly on the handle end of the screwdriver...repeat up and down the crankshaft at each bearing location...you will hear the bearing rolling clear as day...should sound smooth and consistant...if there's a bad one, you'll hear it...
