my 150 1988 mercury runs great except sometimes when im running inreverse you her a thump or low bang from the engine its been doing this for about 3 years so when im backing up i take it slow cause then it dont do it dont know what it could be
changed my lower unit oil and no metal in ther i was thinking if it could be something with the trim since going in reverse it would be trying to pull the motor up just a thought

On a 50hp, I had 2 broken lower motor mounts that caused the sound you're describing.
With the motor in the straight down position and locked, pull back and forth about at the cavitation plate or torque adjustment to look for movement about where the lower tube of the yoke connects near the foot.

Mine used to make that noise I took it to a mechanic and he adjusted the shift linkage. No more noise after that.

shift linkage. sounds like it might not be engaged all the way hmm it only does it when you give it gas fast to back up
like if you let it idle or a little gas it seems to be ok

Thats exactly what mine was doing. Idle backwards fine, add a little gas and THUMP, THUMP. Sounds like the transome is comming off.
It just wasn't engaging all the way. Let me know if this fixes it.
