Default Lets talk gelcoat......

Hey *guys, I found this on the post that Skools done. This guy gives his instructions on gel coat, but I wanted to know if any of you have ever done it. Here is his quote:

"A quick note on using gelcoat: Don't let gelcoat intimidate you. Gelcoat is very user friendly. You can get very good results even hand brushing it if you thin it slightly with lacquer thinner. I like to hand brush it first because its less bother than applying several coats with a paint gun, the clean up is easier and the whole process moves much faster. I then do use my paint gun to shoot a gelcoat / webbing solution pattern over the entire area. Webbing solution is a cheap additive that causes the gelcoat to shoot a stringy pattern out of any paint gun. You use a darker color than the base gelcoat. This puts that nice webbing look to the project, hides any brush marks or imperfections and gives it a real professional look. It is extremely easy to do and yields excellent results. "

I have started the transom project and will be done with the woodwork hopefully this week. I will then glass it in, but I was wondering instead of all that sanding and smoothing if I should try spray on the gel coat with that stringy stuff? Looks easy enough, but I know so little about it. ???

Anyone?? Anyone????

acetone is best for thinning it to spray like paint that way it sets up faster. Um hard to say. What size paint nosal do you have for your gun and which gun do you have you are going to use?

I dont know what size Nozzle Skools...the one that came with it. ??? I have two guns...both are cheapo gravity guns from Lowes...both Porter Cable I think...one about 50.00 and the other around 100.00. Not high dollar, but they do the job. ;D

Another thought...what if I thinning down and spray regular resin...nevermind, that would dry too fast wouldnt it? Is that the main difference between resin and Gcoat...drying time?
