She was running rough on the shakedown cruise two weekends ago. a couple of magnets on my flywheel had come unglued. Very lucky I didn't screw up my magneto (BTY, this is an 88' 175 Johnson). They cleaned it off and reepoxied them back on. Throw in three carb kits and a repaired valve seat and she runs like a top. Total bill was a tad over $400. It will be Saturday before I get her back in the water.
Also, when I put the new steering cable in I went ahead and installed the NFB system. Its really nice to be able to let go of the sheel for a second and have her keep tracking straight. OK, so its not hydraulic, but it works great for a cheap a$$ like me. Thanks to all of you who recommended Boatstoreusa. Good prices and good people. Hopefully I will remember to take pics on the water this weekend. Maury

Daddy had 2 Mariners that the magnets came loose, this is the first OMC I've heard of done that. $400 is cheap to normal, now you got some piece of mind. If your not sure if you got a good deal, price the flywheel.
Good goin ;)

Yeah,
I got a ballpark estimate on one. Pretty expensive. This motor has a vented flywheel and I was told this problem is more common to that type. There is a family business outboard repair shop that has been here in Baton Rouge since the 50's. The original owner plus his son plus the grandson.... The nicest propel on earth. The shop has piles of motor parts laying around - I guess they know where they go. I've been going there for 20+ years. For the work, I thought $400 was a good deal. I'm waiting on Kenny (Lumberslinger) to get me dimensions on his seat cushions for my next project. I probably need to slow down as the bank account is getting thin and our 17 anniversary is right around the corner. :)

Hey Maurie,
I'm glad you went with BoatstoreUSA. As you said, they are really good folks. Hey, I'm curious as to how tight your steering cable is inside the console. Is your cable rubbing against any of the console? Mine is and it's starting to mess up the outside of the cable... Steve

Steve,
My cable go in on the top of the helm unit and the plastic edge does rub against the inside corner of the dash. The small end of the cable doesn't touch anything. I would only think vibration would damage the plastic covering. Is that what yours is doing? My cable is 15'. I may protect it somehow at that point if yours is rubbing. Maury
