Cannon Downrigger Base Material

I have purchased two new downriggers for my 1978 V20 Cuddy. I need to add a base in order to gain a little height so that I can use the swivel base. I know Cannon makes a pedestal base, but I am looking for a cheaper option. I was originally considering teak, but thought maybe King Starboard would be a decent option (?). I have never used King Starboard and not familiar with the product. Any input would be appreciated. I am looking at a 3/4" or 1" thick base that is 5" x 5".

I think the key would've be to find some smaller scrap pieces vs buying a full sheet.

I have found a 12" x 12" x 1" piece for $36...not too bad. My concern is whether the material is hard enough. I am just not familiar with Starboard. Seems like it should work. Cannon wants approx $70 each for pedestal bases.

I’ve used Starboard for a lot of projects, hell the deck of my Egg Harbor is built with it and it is tough stuff. I’d say 1” starboard would be damn near indestructible. I think it’d work great.

That's what I did, the top of the gunnel was too narrow for the base. i think mine is 3/4. never had a problem, but i have not used them that much.

Thanks for the information guys. I appreciate your help. I will take some measurements when I get to the boat and see what Starboard thickness I need. The previous owner had downrigger plates bolted directly on the gunnel. It was a tight fit and they were butted up to the lip on the inside edge of the gunnel (if that makes sense).

She is shrink wrapped and put away for the Michigan winter.
