| What's wrong with my HIN?

Just got my insurance cancelled because my HIN is not good. When I replaced my transom, I made a plate with the HIN that appears in both my bill of sale and my registration; WELA3824M80F20. Well, the insurance came by to take some pics and underwriting determined that my HIN is not in compliance with USCG requirements of watercraft manufactured after Nov 1st, 1972. It should be a 12 Character Identifier and mine is 14 Character. Can someone shed some light on this matter? Thanks! Last edited by BuilderFL; 07-01-2014 at 07:14 PM. |

Leave off the 20 and see if they let it go from that. The "normal" ID would be the first three letters for the manufacturer, the next 5 numbers would be the hull serial number, the next 2 characters would be the date of manufacture and the last 2 would be the year. For instance an Ashcraft I have has the ID as ASH (manufacturer), 01084 (hull serial number), C4 (date code), 94 (year model). My Wellcraft has WEL02524M75I-V20 on the hull ID but I only have it registered with the first 12 characters.

the F20 is the Model number, not HIN, just redo it without the F20 and you should be fine

If I take out the F20, I will have 11 characters and it says I need 12. Still a lost with this issue.
