I just don't understand. How can a human being walk into a 1st grade classroom and commit such horrific crime against babies?. I'm dumfounded!!!! Having a 5 year old in kindergarden, it almost makes me want to vomit. What a sad sad day.

It happens because there truly is evil in this world. I almost wept when I first heard about it. It still saddens me almost to the point of tears.

i agree, hard for me to fathom the events that took place. my wife was an elementary principal for 6 years and we have had many discussions about her exposure at that level. she always said research supported a higher level of danger at the middle or high school level. her main concern was disgruntled parents in a custody battle.

as a parent of children, husband of an educator, & father of a teacher, this has really had an effect of how i look at things that i thought were safe.

It's understandable that there are already misguided calls for tighter gun control in the wake the shootings, but I tend to look at things a little differently. By all accounts, the school principal is a hero, rushing at the gunman, trying to shield the kids. For her efforts, she is amoung the dead adults. I cannot help but wonder if things might have been different and lives might have been saved if she, or any of the other teachers for that matter, had been armed. But of course, she wasn't, because Ct is not a right to carry state. Just something to think about......

If I can remeber correctly I dont think you can carry at a school even if permitted(aside from in your vehicle in the parking lot). I know it can be different state-to-state.........

You're probably correct. I really don't know the present laws, and as you say, they can vary greatly from state to state. But laws that have been made can be changed, so that's really not the issue. The issue is how do we protect our children and ourselves from these monsters.

When my son (who is now 23) was growing up, the elementary school he went to had electronic locks and cameras on every door. You could not enter the school without being admitted from inside the building, and you were escorted to wherever you had to go. I always thought that they were being overly protective.... now I thank God they had such foresight. Although this is not the single answer, for indeed, there are many...perhaps it's a start, along with guns for teachers with the proper psych profile and training?
