My buddy is looking at a motor. It's a 2000 90 HP yamaha. What should he look for

I hate admitting it, but if it is the old style 2 stroke carbed engine there isn't much to worry about other than corrosion issues to watch for. YAMAHA built some really good outboards back then that just ran and ran. Do the obvious checks like water in the lower unit oil, corrosion, and a compression check, but other than that they have a really good reputation to run and run with minimal maintence.

good motor, i don't care for their idle, and i could usually buy three old 88/90 Johnrudes for what 90 Yamaha brings. But they are good motors. Biggest thing I've seen is corrosion related. BTW, I've got a friend that has 99 down here that looks brand new, he's asking $3500
