We finally did our yearly Mackerel trip today, we were to go on the Brooklyn VI out of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, but do to certain circumstances by Noreeast.com, we went on the Golden Eagle out of Belmar, NJ. It was Mackerel all day long, with a few Herring mixed in. Nothing big, small (tinker) to medium sized fish but all you can keep. We kept our usual, 15 each and gave the rest to the boat. We told the mates to let us know when they had enough of fish so we can start throwing them back. In total between the three of us we caught over 500 fish. I've been on the Eagle before and it is a great and friendly boat. One striper was caught, 20-25 lbs and they wanted to keep it, couldn't understand why it had to go back. We told them it had to go back, it was beyond the 3 mile limit, then the mate verified it and said take your picture, becuse it's going back and Jim (capt) made sure she went back.

I was told the boat gives fish to shelters and so on, the ones they don't give away, they grind up for chum. That is why we gave them all the fish they wanted. |
