Unhappy Steering system for 1991v20 with 150Yamaha

I am in need to replace the steering cable and hub for my 1991 v20 which goes directly thru my 150 yamaha. Is there a good place to find this part and does anyone know what I should be looking for, the marina said the engine would have to be removed to do the job and the quote was over 1200. Gotta do it myself...any help figuring this out would be appreciated. Mike from CT.

did mine about 2 years ago, wasn't that hard. i would recommend the nfb system(no feedback). closest you can get to hyd without the expense. i got the helm & cable at west marine and they matched the lowest internet price i found. as far as the length, you old cable will have a number on it that will tell you the length. a lot of members here have done it and had to move motor, but on mine i don't have to. i did find it easier to remove the rod box and feed the helm & stern from the middle. good luck

X2 on NFB. Works great on my 200 Merc. I did have to hang the motor with my engine hoist to get the tube in there. I have $300 in the whole system, including new steering wheel

Default NFB System

If I change to the NFB system, what components need to be purchased to replace the existing steering system? Does the steering wheel need to be removed to do this job? Does the cable still go through the engine (150 Yamaha) and if I change the way the cable runs as recommended does that change the length of the cable?

I've done two steering cable swap-outs and it's not that difficult...yes, the wheel has to be removed because it'll be reinstalled on the new helm...the helm is the assembly attached behind the dashboard...the steering cable runs out of the helm, under the gunwale and back to the engine...the steering wheel mounts onto the shaft that protrudes thru the dash...the cable end; called the ram, will run "thru" your engine as it does now...that is actually called the steering tube and runs from one side of the engine's mounting bracket to the other...sometimes it's HARD to remove the ram from the tube and sometimes it pops right out...
You should not have to purchase another wheel or anything else for that matter...the new cable comes complete w/all you'll need...
I can't see your boat, but who and why is it being recommended you change the route of the existing cable?...

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...classNum=10470

The above link is for the Teleflex 4.2 system...follow the chart here

http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...nical-Steering

for ordering the correct length...go ahead now and remove the center-cap and nut/washer on your steering wheel now and soak the center-pin down w/some rust penetrant spray...let it soak for a day or so, then tap the center pin w/a hammer while pulling out on the wheel...repeat daily til your new cable comes in...it oughtta let go by then...if not, let us know and we'll tell you how to get it off...and you may as well start pulling the rod-holder insert from inside the boat on the starboard side...you'll need to access under the gunwale there...

On some boats the engine DOES have to be removed...but sometimes marinas, etc will say that when it may not be needed...it will depend on how straight a shot it is from where the cable comes outta the splashwell and into the steering (tilt) tube...if you determine the engine DOES have to come off, let us know and we'll walk you thru it...the good news is, the engine only has to be SEPARATED from the transom(not moved far) and the tilt-tube lined up w/where the cable is coming from...you gotta HANG it from STOUT tree limb or garage/carport beam...LET US KNOW IF YOU NEED ADVISE ON THIS...

I've had 2 of these systems on my boats and recommend them highly...short of hydraulic steering, it's the best way to go...
