Default New Engine

Took the boat to the shop last week, shift cable had frozen & broken. Turns out the shift shaft had frozen & the motor was so rusted up the mechanic said he could not get it apart to fix.

Motor is a '95 Merc 200 offshore, a gas hog but has served me well. The mechanic said he could put a Merc '05 200 EFI on it that was in good shape for $6000 & he'd give me $800 for the old merc.

Really don't want to go big bucks on a yammie 4 stroke which is what I want, just put new appliances in the kitchen!

He said much better milage on the new merc (not hard to believe) & a little lighter, both things I'd want.

What do y'all think?

does that include new controls and mounting? sounds high to me for a 6 yr old motor. i'd say look around a little first MJ didn't pay much more for his 4 stroke yamaha.

I don't want to slam the mechanic or anyone else, but a 95 and a 05 Merc are going to weight in about the same. Same displacement (2.5L) just a different fuel delivery. Fuel mileage is not going to be that much different either. If the 05 is EFI you might pick up a little fuel mileage but not much. If the 2005 is a DFI (Optimax, 3.0L) it will give roughly 45% improvement in mileage but is actually heavier than the old carbed 200.
What you will gain is ease of starting and IMO slightly smoother running with the EFI. The EFI is computer controlled so they are more complex than the old carbed motor but they have proven very reliable. Touch the key and go like a modern day automobile, no more choking it to start.
I doubt it is the Optimax at that price because it uses a different wiring harness and Smartcraft gauges $$$.
Labor counts for something, any warranty? If I read this right you would be out of pocket $5200, including the labor? If so that puts the actual cost of the motor at around $4800 to $4900 plus labor. Maybe a little on the high end.

I just bought a 2004 Yamaha 225 4 stroke with all controls SS prop and all gauges for $7000 and it has just 200 hours on it.

That said I would not go more then a 150 hp in a 4 stroke as the weight is unreel!! 600 + pounds for my 225!!

When re powering these older boats they were never meant for these 4 strokes! I would go with a same year or older good motor or if new a Etec, they much lighter!

I just took a 175 merc 2.4 off my boat, early 90's and ran like a champ and great gas mileage.
Thats what I be looking for instead od a 2.5 or gas hog 3.0!!
And I know a lot of guys all love to add 200 + HP but these boats do great with a nice 150 on them! above that its just a waste of the little you gain in speed and gas.

Thanks for all the input guys.

It is an EFI, & the plan was to use the controls from my 200 offshore that are on the boat.

Didn't ask about a warranty, I'll add that to the list.

I was planning to go to a 150, rarely need all the power I have now & could use some more range, I like to take it out to the blue water.

I'm torn between trying to get the price down or just bringing it home starting the search, problem is snapper season starts next week & because of the oil spill I haven't been fishing in a LONG time.
