My local marina told me that the Yamaha fuel/water seperator filters are better than the Racors, he sells both, wondering if it's true ?

Better, maybe. Cheaper, definately. Look at the micron rating on the filters. The lower the number, the finer the filter which means it catches more crap.

The new tall blue YAMAHA filters are supposed to be the best you can get right now for dealing with this ethanol crap we got. They are a true 2 micron filter with a coalescing element in them to strip the water out.

the racor elements are by far the better element. You can get them in 30, 10, or 2 micron. They also have their patented "aqua blocker" media that prevents water from passing. Yamaha and all the aftermarket manufactures are just catching up with Racor. On the down side, the racors are very expensive, because of that, people generally don't replace them as often as they should, especially with the drain fitting on the bottom, I see people draining them over and over again, never replacing the element. Racor offers a regular spin on filter with out the bowl on the bottom, most dealers don't stock them.

You CAN see the crap in the bottom of a racor bowl. My racor was the first thing I changed when I bought my V. Previous owner had the el cheapo oil filter non draining type. My racor filtered out all sorts of crud and pink slimy shiznit. That was before I replaced my fuel tank. Now I replace my racor once a year whether I need to or not. I've never had to drain the bowl since replacing my tank 6+ years ago. Keep fresh gas in your tank and run your engine even if it's just in the driveway to keep it turned over and fresh gas in the fuel system. The racor isn't that expensive when compared to the rest of the boats expenses.
