No Fire

We got stuck out in the bay today when I went to fire up the motor. After much trouble shooting we found out we had fuel but no FIRE. 1989 200 Hp Mercury Black Max is the motor. We have no spark on any plugs. We checked the fuse and its ok. We then unplugged the main wiring harness connector and tryed to get spark buy jumping the starter with a screw driver and checking the plug wires for spark. Please help my money is running low

You can troubleshoot it yourself so you replace the right componet the first time, but you will need a service manual and an ohmeter. Could be either the stator, trigger, or powerpacks, but I would bet on the stator. There are 2 windings in the stator for high and low speed operation. Disconnect the reds and blues from the stator from the powerpacks and ohm them out. They have to all go back one way, so take a picture before you start or label the wires. New stator was about $250 and was not hard at all to change either.

the motor ran great out on the bay and then would not crank to return? check the kill switch in the starter circuit.
did your tach start acting crazy lately?
HOM is probably onto something withthe stator

ran great on the way out and as I made my approach I did notice a different tone from the motor as we backed down throttle to lower RPM....I did not think to look at my tach. But we found some sholes then drifted for about a half hour and went to move and she just kept turning over

sounds like the low speed windings in the stator, look under the flywheel for melted potting material, looks like glue, or look for burnt wires on the windings
