Default Need Advice on Fuel Filter????

Guys looking for some advice on my fuel filter. I just purchased a v20 since the previous motor was no good I replaced it with a newly reconditioned 1991 Mercury 200 hp 2.5 l v6 outboard w/o the oil injection. The present filter looks to be a regular fuel filter. When I purchased the boat I was told it was last run this past summer. The fuel tank is at half.
My question is should I replace the present filter with a water seperator and do you think I could just top off the fuel tank with fresh gas, oil and a stabilizer. Our should I drain her down and start new?????

When in doubt pull it out. If you are not 100% certain if the gas was mixed properly and treated with a stabilizer, I would start over with fresh fuel and oil. And a fuel water seperator is always a good idea, and make sure and use a 8 micron or smaller filter media to prevent water from getting through.

I replace my filter with a racore 10mm and I replace the filter every spring! It also has a plastic bottom so you can see when and if you get water in the gas, you just open the bottom screw and drain the water. Good to go!

I also agree that if it is a new to you boat, and you are not sure on the gas, DRAIN it! Nosence taking the chance of killing the motor or the carbs cause of some one else right out of the gate!

Good Luck!!

I just bought a new to me 2004 4 stroke Yamaha, I drained 100 gallons of mixed gas out of my boat this week and filled with all new gas and new filter

Thanks Guys
I figured that it would be best to start all fresh just didn't want to have to pull the trigger on 60 gallons of fresh gas. But in the long run it's cheaper than a new motor......
