Not another boat!!!

My son just bought a 1973 Farenwald Seacamper house boat. Actually more of a camper on a hull. It is an I/O. I and he know nothing about I/Os. OBs fine, I/O - nothing. Engine is a Ford 302. Out drive is an 888 Mercruiser. Boat seems to run fine. But, PO says that the shift cable is "sticky". Didn't notice any problem when in water the other day. Even though it runs well, I am uncomfortable that I know so little about I/Os in general.

Any advice on where to start to learn? Are manuals still available? any advice is appreciated.

Maco- bracket is not the answer.
