want to fire her up, on land fresh water cooled do i still have to give the out drive a water hose like a outbord, never had an i/o only inboreds and outbored motors , i/o are new to me i used to run my inboreds all the time with the sea pump belts off

O: do any one know what out drive i have there is no name on it its a 1980 with a merc 470 i want to remove it and go over it top to bottom Thanks for any help guys

you probably have a Mercruiser Alpha One, i have an 84 470 Mercruiser and that is what mine is

Yes you have to run with hose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the freash water in the motor is just that for the motor. But there is no fan like in a car, so how they get the water cool is to pump raw water to the exchange box were the cold ocean water is on one side cooling the hot freash water on the other side.

Thats it in a nut shell.

Yes, run a hose to the out drive, you have a Alpha1 out drive with a 470 mercrusier also called a 170 great motor just a few timely tips. change your intake (manafould ???) every four years "no questions about it" and the water pump impeller in the out drive every two years, and this is way you run a hose to the out drive because you will burn out this rubber impeller. If you are handy install a fresh water wash out and run a y hose to both the wash out and the lower unit. Take care of this motor and it will not only take care of you but will give you power and save you gas money at the same time. enjoy it.
