We lost the Old Orchard Light to Sandy. It's been there since the 1890's, what a shame. It was a great, EARLY Striper spot and when the Blues moved in, big Blues for your taking.

No not really....was just commenting that technically there is probably more structure in the water to hold fish than before. Agreed that its a shame to see it gone...just saying that the fish cant see it from their perspective.

Thanks for the back up Tommy. Giorgio, sorry, i am sure my response came off flip. We have been talking about old orchard being gone around work alot with fellow fisherman and after days of disbelief the conversations usually ends with what do you think it will do for the fishing in the future.
You didnt get to hear any of the othr talk just the end of the conversation about it probably being good for the fish. You guys in Staten Island got it bad. Understandable you might be pretty touchy about the situation.

As stated, I am sure his intentions were not to offend you but to point out a little positive for that disaster.
I have met Rob, Great guy. The destruction of that lighthouse that lasted over a century weathering other storms, looked like it should have stood up against any storm is a great example of how powerful Sandy was. Thanks for sharing, best wishes for everybody effected. rkc

Waves from Sandy were over 30' measured by the buoy outside NY harbor.
Must have been exceptionally rough and high water to knock the light house down.' I share the opinion that worse happened - loss of homes, loss of life but it is notable. For fishing, unless all the structure around the lighthouse gets removed, it will still be a good fishing site. No idea if funds will be made available to re build or even remove all the structure. Too bad. |

I'm late to the party as usual but...
Yeah, what everybody else said about RWilson. Only met him once but defimitely isn't the kind of guy to make fun at someone else's expense. Giogio, on a more serious note. It does suck to lose an old landmark like that. But looking at the before picture was that a steel structure? If so I guess it was doomed at some point. Sad part is AFAIK there is only one lighthouse in the whole US still active and that is in Boston Harbor. All the others rely on parks and local government to maintain them. |
